HCPL Receives 500K Carnegie Grant
Adult Education in the Greater Houston Area Gets Boost
I am happy to announce that our library system, Harris County Public Libary, (Texas) has been awarded a Carnegie grant to further adult education.
We have some very amazing ESL programs to help learners from all countries and languages to learn to speak English, in conversation and daily life. This is essential to transition into the next step, which is preparing for citizenship. Take a look at that citizenship test ya’ll! It is HARD, and we offer educational support for them to learn what being a U.S. citizen means.
At the same time, we also offer adult literacy programs to help EVERYONE be a better reader and speaker, especially those who wish to transition to one of these next steps: our Career Online High School, our GED program or our FutureU College Readiness program. If a person is ready to learn, we are here with these programs to help.
Did I mention that this is all free to all, through the 26 branches of Harris County Public Library?
As you can probably tell, I am a big advocate of public libraries. Every town I go to, its my very first stop.
The best thing you can do to show library support is to go to your local library today, attend a program or check out some materials. Ask a librarian to give you a tour or tell you about their adult resources, and ask about what’s online you can use from home with your library card. Insider tips: “Many libraries will allow you to have a card, even if you don’t live nearby. Just ask.” Call the library and ask a reference question or to help you find a good book. Or hit one of those “Chat with a Librarian” or “Ask a Question” buttons on a library website. Doesn’t have to be your local library.
Here is the link to read more about the HCPL grant, and there you can see all of the other library recipients. Maybe one is near you. If so, give them a call and say, “Congrats”.

What’s your favorite library? I’d love to “check them out”.
That is wonderful news!!
Congrats! With all the library and museum funding cuts, it’s good to see the Carnegie Foundation continuing to provide support.
